BLUEBIRDS AND BATS?
...SURE THEY GO TOGETHER!

February 2004 started our Project's section for also trying to help increase Bat population numbers.  When I started Christy's Bluebird Project the very first thoughts I had was to do B & B's  which meant Bluebirds and Bats.  I have always thought Bats were neat, and always wanted to have my own Bat house.  A couple of times, I have also visited the Carlsbad Caverns, and seen the huge numbers of Bats fly out of the cave.  I even had a Bat fall at my feet while I watched!  What a site to watch!

Working with the Bluebird Project, and the way it has kept growing, I have never found time to do more than think a little about Bats.  This year after meeting up with Billie Sunday, thoughts of Bats are becoming a reality.  Billie lives out in Myakka City, FL, area and believes that the Bat populations are very low and that they need to also be brought back.  A few years ago Billie created a Bat Tube, which you can see photos of on this page.  One of his tubes was placed at a site in Arcadia.  He visited the site and stated, that he does not know exactly what is in the tube but, by the droppings underneath there is a lot of something inside.  I choose to believe it is Bats.  (Continued Below)

Billie Sunday is making the Bat Tubes now for our Project.  Some other Monitors have also put up other types of Bat housing.  The photo to the right is what the insides of the Bat Tube look like.  The tube in these photos is 48 inches long, and the tube is a 6 inch PVC pipe.  Now he is trying to make 30 inch tubes out of 8 inch pipe.  Materials which go into the making of the Bat Tubes are from other recycled materials.

Billie would like to see anyone who would like a Bat Tube to have one.  The list above, are those Trails which are now in line to receive their tubes.  The one thing Billie stresses is, that if he gives out a Bat Tube, is that it is to be put up immediately.  Bat Tubes like bird houses do no good if sitting inside your garage!

Do we know if the Bat Tubes will be all that successful?  From the one in Arcadia, it sounds like it to me.  The materials to make the tubes are recycled, and then Billie is proud to give of his time to make them.  He says, that if it gets us more Bats then it is all worth the effort.  So I am very greatful Billie has joined our Project.

If you would like to talk about Bats, and would like to put up a Bat House, or have materials to donate, please give me a call at 355-5265 or e-mail ke4fej1@msn.com

One person cannot do it all,
but one person can make a difference!
